Cumberland Jack To Hanover token 1830 used condition holed
This was probably used as a Whist token (a card game predecessor of modern Bridge). It depicts a caricature of Ernest Augustus the Duke of Cumberland and the next in line to the English throne after Victoria, who became Queen upon the sudden death of her father in 1837. Ernest Augustus was sent to preside over the seat of Hanover which was inherited by the British Crown, as the King of Hanover could not be a Queen. The minting of these tokens reflected his unpopularity among the English public. It continued long after the coronation and includes multiple dates and die varieties. It is unclear why this one is dated prior to the coronation, when Victoria would have been only 11.
