Hungarian Fund 5 Dollars note 2 February 1852 New York very nice condition
These notes were issued by or on behalf of the exiled Hungarian Independence politician Lajos Kossuth (pictured at left of the note) on his American trip, where he was initially welcomed very warmly. Soon, he was unable to integrate his agenda into American politics, dominated by the issue of Abolitionism and inter-party power-wrangling and left for Europe that same year.
The notes promise to be redeemable upon the foundation of an independent Hungarian government which as we know did not eventuate until the 20th century.
Rare in this condition.
